Ethan’s Priesthood Ordination and Seth’s Baby Blessing

Today was a big day for our family. It is the first time that we were able to combine special ordinances for the kids. We had originally talked about waiting on the baby blessing until closer to when Wendy would be having her baby, so that mom and dad could come up for the baby blessing and then travel just a little further to see Wendy’s baby. But when we realized that Ethan is turning 12 and that means he would be receiving the priesthood, and that that would be something the grandparents might want to be here for, we decided to plan the baby blessing around Ethan’s birthday and ordination.

My parents drove up from California, and Laurel and Roine brought their family and Granny out for the occasion. This is also the first week since Seth was born that he and I have gone to church. Kyle gave Seth his blessing during sacrament meeting. Thankfully Seth slept and was nice and quiet during the blessing. During the third hour of church, Kyle and Dad left priesthood after opening exercises to collect us for the ordination. I went to collect the rest of our kiddos so they could be there too. I thought it would be nice for them to be there to see Ethan be ordained, so that they have his example to look up to.

After church we came home and had a late lunch/early dinner. We had sandwich rolls and lunch meats and cheeses so everyone could assemble their own sandwiches. We had chips and stuff for making Italian sodas. Laurel brought out frog eye salad, and everything was good. We also had cake and ice cream and we just hung out.

The girls decided they were going to attack Alex, and he was a good sport about it.

When the girls were tired of climbing all over him, they decided to do his hair instead.

Laurel and Roine and their family took Granny and left early, because they had a meeting to get to. Then Kyle took Ethan to his very first Stake Priesthood meeting. 🙂

Liesl wasn’t able to come out this weekend so I didn’t get any posed pictures of the family or of Kyle and I and the boys. In fact I didn’t take pictures of Ethan at all. I did pose Seth to take pictures of him in his blessing suit though.

Ethan’s 12th Birthday

Today is Ethan’s 12 birthday, and we had such a crazy evening. First of all, the girls and I had our weekly Girl Scout meeting, then we had a window of time to celebrate in before I had to be at a Boy Scout committee meeting. So we decided ahead of time that we would be buying pizza for his birthday dinner, instead of making it. During Girl Scouts, Kyle took the non-Girl scouts to go pick up the pizza. When they got back the girls had all left and we sent all the kids to the table for dinner. I thought it would be fun to put the birthday candles on the pizza, since we decided to not have a cake tonight, but to have it on the weekend when everyone comes out for his ordination.

I did make him a cookie pizza though. For the record, trying to use chocolate syrup to write “Happy Bday Ethan” was not a good idea. It’s quite runny and comes out quite fast, and then it all just ran together so that you can’t tell what I wrote. I tried to use m&m’s to make the words a little clearer, but it was still quite messy.

After dinner we gave Ethan his present. Kyle bought it before Christmas, and I think he had originally intended to give it to him for Christmas, but Ethan found out back in November that Kyle had bought it. Kyle thought it would be funny to have it just not appear at Christmas time, considering Ethan would have been expecting it. So we were mean parents and made him wait until his birthday before receiving it.

Upcoming Events

Ethan turns twelve this week and will be ordained with the Aaronic Priesthood next week, and we decided that we would have Seth’s baby blessing at the same time so out of town family could be here for both. Tonight I wanted to take pictures of the two of them so I could send out an invitation online.

Then the other kids wanted to give Seth some loving.

Adam’s first Fathers and Sons campout

The boys have been looking forward to each year’s Fathers and Sons camp out, even though I typically don’t care for roughing it in the great outdoors.  With the craziness of Rebecca’s camping trip, I figured we simply wouldn’t go, but she notified me that the little girls would have someone to watch them, so I prepared for the trip.  Adam didn’t really know what was going on, but was thrilled to be in the small car with just his brothers.

This year, we went to Spanish Fork Canyon, which has been much nicer than the closer Willow Park campgrounds in Saratoga Springs.  We had a neighbouring campground to last year’s, just up on top of the hill, surrounded by trees, but also providing flat grassy areas for tents, and a pavilion with benches.  At the head of the pavilion was a large brick fireplace.

We weren’t first there, but when we arrived there was enough of a selection of tent sites that we could easily pick where to set up.  I chose a place just north of the pavilion, close to the trees, to not be distracted at night by the lights and chatter once the kids started coming to bed.  This was our first year using a giant tent we purchased at Costco, claiming to fit twelve people.  It was quite impressive, with two rooms divided by a zipped wall, plus one of the rooms could have been opened into a mesh lined patio.

The older boys played around in it a bit, then wandered off to seek out activities to do.  I basically spent the time following Adam to keep him out of trouble.

As the evening progressed, and more people showed up, our tent became a hit with the boys who wanted to come in and hang out.  I didn’t mind, as long as they didn’t track dirt into it, and kept it zipped.  More people set up in the pavilion, to eat and play.  The fireplace was lit and some people started on their Dutch Oven desserts.  A common theme at these campouts, is for some of the guys to bring their Magic The Gathering cards, and this time was no different.  The pavilion had lights, at least, so the fireplace was mainly for entertainment use.  The boys started to notice they could run off into the bushes and bring back weeds that they could throw into the fireplace, and they also found a mouse in the area, which they scared around the fireplace until it ran off.

Once it got dark, we started to wrap up the evening.  I like how our ward has mainly young families, so most of the people who came had little kids, and wanted to go to bed early.  Adam was starting to get cranky and noticeably tired, so I carried him to our tent and put him down for the night.  I also started closing up the tent windows, and my ears picked up a faint scritching sound.  At first, I thought that mouse from earlier, was trying to get inside the tent, but then I saw its shadow on the inside, crawling up the wall! And, with Adam sleeping and it being dark, I had limited options.  I ended up using the flashlight feature on my mobile phone, chasing it around and using a shoe to try and knock it out, before my adventure woke Adam.  Fortunately, he stayed asleep through the chaos.  Unfortunately, it didn’t stop running until I had knocked it out with the shoe, so I grabbed a pair of shoes to pick it up, and tossed it outside the tent.

Ethan and Jeremy were in the pavilion, presumably watching some of the older guys play Magic and similar.  I ended up falling alseep with Adam, waking later to find Ethan and Jeremy had wandered to bed on their own.

In the morning, we had typical Fathers and Sons breakfast, consisting of meat products, sausage and bacon, plus pancakes, all cooked on dutch oven griddles.  Everyone ate their full and we were done with the event, as the campground needed to be cleared by 12:15.  Everyone started packing up their tents, with ours being one of the last, and we left to return home and take a shower.
