Many Hands Make Light Work

Opening song:

Opening prayer:

Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 3:10 “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.”

Lesson: Tonight I had something really awesome planned for the lesson. While the kids were putting their pajamas on I moved the love seat to the middle of the living room. When the kids came in they were REALLY excited to find that FHE tonight required that I move the furniture, but I had them all sit on the big couch to wait for everyone else to come out.

We talked about work, and the chores that each of us has, then we asked them how hard it would be for one of them to do ALL of the work around the house. Then I proceeded to have each child try to pick up the entire love seat. Obviously, none of them could. Ethan could lift one side but he couldn’t lift the whole thing. So then I had everybody come to the couch and help pick it up. Then we asked them if that was easy or hard that time. They all laughed as they said it was really easy. Then just to make a point I said “Well I don’t want to help” and I sat on the couch, and instructed them to try to pick it up again. They couldn’t, it was too hard. So after that we talked about how it’s important for everyone to help with the work around the house, and not just to expect mommy to do it all. Kyle isn’t home much and so he’s not here to help a whole lot, but everyone needs to help, so that it’s not like mommy’s trying to lift the whole couch off the ground all by herself. Of course the kids started to groan at this point, so we pointed out how even the scriptures say, if you don’t work, you don’t eat. 😛

Treat: Brownie with ice cream

Sit n’ Spin

Friday, we went to target because Dad wanted to take the kids shopping so they could pick out their Christmas presents. Dad figured this would be a better idea than him picking things out and shipping them, and since they were coming up right after Christmas anyways, why ship anything? Anyways, so we went shopping so the kids could pick out what they wanted for Christmas. While we were there, we found a sit n’ spin! That was just so awesome! None of the kids picked it, probably because they had no idea what it was, and were too interested in looking at other things. But it was reasonably priced and Dad told Mom to pick it up. So the past couple of days the kids have been trying it out and figuring out how to make it work.

Tyra got on it the other night and pulled at the wheel and said “It doesn’t work!” Obviously she wasn’t doing it right. Today Chloe figured it out. She doesn’t go very fast, but she can make it spin on her own! She is so dang cute.

I remember when I was a kid we had a purple sit n’ spin, and I used to make that thing turn so fast that the world was just a blur to me! I did get on it the other night, just to see if I could still do it. With my belly in the way it was difficult, but I could still make it spin! No I couldn’t go as fast as I could in my childhood days, but I was able to show the kids my hand over hand trick to keep it in continuous motion. 😉

The Sacrament

Opening song: Family Night

Opening Prayer: Ethan

Scripture: Matthew 26:26-28 “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

Lesson: Tonight we talked about how when we are baptized we are washed clean, and the sacrament is a renewal of our baptismal covenants. We discussed the covenants we make at baptism, and talked about how each week we have the opportunity to repent and partake of the sacrament and become clean again. Each week we can take the sacrament and start fresh.

Object Lesson: I passed out York peppermint patties, and we broke them in half. I pointed out how very white the inside is, yet the longer I hold it in my hand the dirtier that white becomes. And I likened this to what happens to us as the week progresses. As the days go by in the week we make mistakes and get dirty, but on Sunday we have the opportunity to repent and take the sacrament and it’s like getting a new peppermint patty and we get to start over again. 🙂

Closing Prayer: Daddy

The party that followed…

Following the baptism, some of our guests came over for lunch. We had a great time hanging out with everybody. Ethan was very happy that his friend Jacob could be over for a bit too.

The kids had a great time playing with legos and the food was yummy. We decided to keep it simple and had rolls with deli meats and cheeses to make sandwiches. Then we had a few bags of chips, a veggie platter, and jello.

Some of the old people took a nap:

After awhile we sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Ethan and had birthday cake.

And after cake Ethan got to open his presents. It’s been a very busy, exciting day.

PS: As usual there are more pictures in the photo gallery. 🙂

Ethan’s Baptism!

IMG_1676

Today was Ethan’s big BIG day! The day of his baptism, and his first step back to our Heavenly Father’s presence. Ethan has been going back and forth about whether he wanted to be baptized or not. His main fear being that he didn’t want to go all the way under water. But he finally made up his mind to do it.

The day was super crazy. We spent all morning getting ready, and we got to the stake center about 30-40 minutes early. Ethan’s baptism was scheduled to be the last one of the day, and we were to be in the chapel. There was another group in there when we got there so we just hung out for a bit in the foyer trying to keep the kids reverent (which wasn’t happening) so we were trying to keep them at least quiet enough that they wouldn’t bug the other groups in the church, and Liesl took tons of pictures.

And here’s our family, minus Chloe (who happened to be napping in auntie Tiffany’s arms).

Despite most people being there so early, we ended up starting rather late. Liesl and Laurel went off to another room to practice playing and leading the music together. Liesl ended up saying that she didn’t even know the “Baptism” song let alone know how to play it, and Karen didn’t have her glasses that she needs for reading music with her so she didn’t feel confident enough to take over for that song. So we ended up asking Sister Graham to play that one for us. We were waiting for Debby and Jeff to arrive, and when we called to find out where they were, they were barely in American Fork, so we decided to get started without them.

We started out by singing “America the Beautiful”, which was Ethan’s pick. I showed him all the other songs that seemed to relate to baptism and he was still set on having “America the Beautiful” as the opening song. 🙂 Then Auntie Tiffany said the opening prayer. Then mom gave the talk on baptism, which was her first talk ever! And her eye sight must be going on her, because the notes that she had typed up for her talk she had in rather large font and she was still having difficulty seeing them. Then we went down the hall to the room with the font in it. The little kids all got down in the front. There was pretty much just our kids, and their cousins and Ethan’s best friend Jacob, so they were able to all sit in one straight line next to the glass. When Kyle took Ethan down into the font, I remember Dinah and some of the other kids just getting the giggles. It made me giggle too, which I know doesn’t seem very reverent. But it made me think of the day that my family was sealed in the temple, and the ladies in the temple nursery told us that we must not laugh when we saw our parents all dressed up in their temple clothes. But when we all got into the sealing room, and they arranged each one of us into our positions around the altar, when it was David’s turn he plopped his arm down on the altar like he was getting ready to arm wrestle the person on the other side. Ha! That sounds really bad, but he had a broken arm and it was in a cast and that was just the way his arm happened to go down, so I remember at that point a couple of us started laughing. Then everybody was laughing. So when the kids were giggling with the excitement of Ethan being in the water, that’s what I had thought of.

Kyle had to lower Ethan into the water twice. The first time, Ethan hadn’t bent his knees enough so his feet started going up and his top half didn’t go all the way under. The second time he went all the way under but it appeared that his bangs were floating a bit, although when he came up his bangs were all wet. So they must have gone under, if just barely.

While Kyle and Ethan dried off and dressed, everyone moved back into the chapel and Liesl played some hymns. And when Kyle and Ethan came back Roine gave a talk on the Holy Ghost, and then Kyle confirmed Ethan a member of the church and gave him the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Then Bishop Hunt got up to say a few things, and when he was done he invited Sister Graham to say a few things (since she was there representing the primary presidency), and then he asked that I come up and bear my testimony. My eyes must have nearly popped out of my head judging by looks on Laurel’s and Liesl’s faces up on the stand, when they heard that and looked at me. But I got up there and said a few things, and I was terrified, so I didn’t say a lot. 🙂

Finally we sang “Baptism” from the Children’s songbook, and Granny gave the closing prayer.
