First Inspection and Drywall

Dave came over this morning to get ready for the inspector to come see the basement. I let him downstairs and a little later the inspector arrived. I let him in the house, and then I let him downstairs. Just a few minutes later he came back up and after saying that it looks like we’re all set, he left. That was QUICK! I went downstairs to talk to Dave to see how it went and he said that everything looked great and that the inspector did suggest that we get some more insulation down there. I guess there are energy efficient tax rebates that we would qualify for if we added more insulation. So after talking to Kyle about it, we decided to do it.

As Dave was getting ready to leave he told me that drywall was going to be here at one, and that he didn’t set that time. The drywall guys called him and told him that that was when they were going to be here. So today, I put the kids down for their naps very excited and anxious about the arrival of our drywall. The main guy in charge of the drywall job, Weston, was here at one to look over everything and to see if the drywall will fit through the bedroom window so they don’t have to carry each piece in through the house and down the stairs. Dave also came back to go over everything with him and they had to move my can racks into the utility closet (they had been taken apart for this) so that they don’t have to continually move them out of the way. The truck with the drywall was running late, but it finally arrived and they unloaded the drywall into the basement. πŸ™‚

Lydia’s Latest Thing

Lately, Lydia has constantly been after stuff on the counter. She also seems to think that the dishwasher is her own personal step ladder. She likes to open it up, and she pulls out the bottom rack all the way, and then she pulls the top rack out part way THEN she proceeds to climb up to the counter. There was one night, that Kyle woke in the middle of the night hearing her crying very loudly in the kitchen. He went out to see what happened and found that she had been trying to climb on the dishwasher and her feet slipped through the slats and she was completely stuck. This morning I awoke about 6:40am to hear noises out in the kitchen and I went out and discovered:

Lydia sitting on the counter withΒ  two or three unwrapped Lindt truffle balls in her hand, one on the counter and one in her mouth. Obviously, getting stuck in the dishwasher rack didn’t teach her to not climb on the dishwasher any more. It just taught her to be more careful next time. πŸ˜›

Electricity

The electricians finished all their stuff today! Down the stairs we had them put in some night lights:

This is the wall where we will set up an entertainment center:

We had them put a fan in the laundry room to keep it from getting musty in there.

They also put a fan under the stairs, to keep air circulating so Kyle’s computer network stuff won’t get overheated.

Everything else basically just looks like wires and boxes for switches and plugs. Now we are ready for the first inspection. πŸ˜€

Framing Fix-up

Well framing fix up started in earnest on Dec 11th! I call it framing fix up because we had most of it framed from the last time we tried to get our basement finished, but we never quite finished it because we ran out of money. Apparently some of the framing that we did wasn’t done properly or wasn’t straight, and it needed some fixing up before they could continue on with the framing around the duct work and all of that. They took a chunk out of the wall leading into the family room. If they had left it, the doorway would have been too narrow after adding drywall and would not have passed inspection.

An electrician came over to go over what still need to be done on his end, and he wanted to know why the can light in the part of the hall going toward the bathroom was so off center. I told him that it was because the original drawing showed three can lights straight down the main hall, but because of the air return in the ceiling, we decided to put one over here on the way to the bathroom. The reason that it wasn’t centered is because they were supposed to be putting in a small linen closet in the corner. Dave, the contractor, said “That’s right! I had forgotten about that.” Then he said “Patrick, will you get on that?” So Patrick got right to work putting our linen closet up.

And now there is a closet in the girl’s future room! It’s smaller than the closet that we put in the boys room, because the ducts kind of prevent it from being bigger.

Monday, a plumber came to do the plumbing for a sink in the laundry room.

Today the framing is officially finished! They even put these 2×4’s in the wall where the door handles might hit, to prevent the kids from knocking holes through the drywall by slamming the bedroom doors. They may dent the drywall but they certainly won’t be putting holes through it.

And now we wait for electric to be finished. πŸ™‚

Conversations of Christmas

I was in the kitchen shaping snow globe cookies when I hear this conversation in the living room:

Tyra: Guess what Dinah, we saw Santa at the school today.
Jeremy: He wasn’t the real Santa.
Tyra: Ya huh!
Jeremy: No. His beard…was…PLAS-TIC!

Later as I was shaping more cookies I heard this other conversation between my boys:

Jeremy: You know what the candy cane presents?
Ethan: Represents? A “J” for Jesus, and the shepherds crook.
Jeremy: HOW DID YOU KNOW!?!?
Ethan: Because I’m smart.
Jeremy: Do you know what the lights on the tree represent?
Ethan: The light of Christ.
Jeremy: No! They represent the stars!
Ethan: No. They represent the light of Christ.

I love that my children can believe in Santa Claus, but that they also know that Christmas is all about celebrating the birth of our Savior.
