India Fest

Ethnic festival #2: India Fest! This event just happened to be happening the same day that we had decided to go to the Oktoberfest, so we went from German festivities, to Indian festivities. 🙂

We went into the shop in the Hindu temple first, so everyone could use the bathroom. While we were in there Adam ended up pulling the fire alarm (little stinker). NOBODY left the building when the alarm went off which was kind of interesting. Yes it was a false alarm but how could EVERYONE in the building know that?

When we went back outside we found that Laurel’s family had arrived as well. So we sat on the lawn together to watch a performance of a Hindu play. It was hard to tell what was going on, since we didn’t watch it from the beginning and we aren’t very familiar with Hindu beliefs, but it was interesting, and it ended with the hero setting fire to a large demon with many heads and arms. Lighting the demon up set off a bunch of fireworks to end the festival.

Oktoberfest

Ethan is working on the Citizenship in the World merit badge at a merit badge pow wow, and needed to attend or participate in an international event or ethnic festival. My first thought was Oktoberfest. So we did some research to see if there would be an Oktoberfest celebration anywhere nearby and found one in Snowbird and planned on attending the Saturday between the two sessions of the pow wow.

Before we went we learned a little bit about what the Oktoberfest is. It began as the celebration of a German Royal wedding between King Ludwig I and Princess Therese. The celebration included performances, horse races food and beer tasting. Today it seems like it’s just been turned into a huge beer fest. Which really is very sad.

They didn’t want to look at the camera because the sun was shining in their faces, but I wanted a picture with the sign that says “Oktoberfest” in the background. 🙂

We didn’t really do a lot while we were there. The lines for food were insanely long, there were LOTS of places to get beer, and there were some rides and things but to have access to those it was about $50/person and those things really have nothing to do with Oktoberfest anyway they are only there because they are part of the ski resort where the Oktoberfest was held.

We did get to listen to live German music though!

Since the lines for food were so crazy, and there was nowhere to sit even if we got some food, we decided that we would just go into town to go to Siegfried’s to get some German food to eat. That was a really fun German market/delicatessen that Kyle and I will have to go back to and get a closer look at sometime when we don’t have all the kids with us. 😉

Dinah’s Eighth Birthday

Before we left the fair last night we picked up a funnel cake for Dinah’s birthday cake. I had a candle in my purse at the fair, because we had planned on doing funnel cake for her birthday cake all along, but I had forgotten to bring a lighter to light the candle. Also with the kids being so grumpy, we ended up just bringing the funnel cake home. Everyone was asleep when we got home last night so we did the funnel cake tonight.

For her birthday present, Kyle bought her a Hello Kitty hat with attached mittens at the fair.
