My New Cub Scout…

…well, cub scout leader. Kyle has been involved in scouts since the beginning of the year. As soon as Ethan became a bear, Kyle was going to cub scouts every week, due to the fact that every single week, one or both of Ethan’s official bear leaders wouldn’t be there. So when Kyle was asked to meet with a member of the Bishopric, back in April, we knew it was going to be a scout calling. We weren’t expecting it to be Webelos though, considering Kyle had been going to bears every week for months.  So he started going to Webelos, (Ethan was NOT happy about that) but we had to wait for his background check to clear before they could make it official over the pulpit. They finally made the calling official, and after awhile they found someone to be his companion, but that didn’t last long. The other leader’s wife ended up being put on bed rest due to complications with her pregnancy, and so he stopped coming and eventually he was released. So they are still working on finding Kyle a companion. The only reason I haven’t blogged about Kyle being cub scouts before now, is because I was waiting for him to get his uniform so I could get a picture of him wearing it. 🙂

Ethan received his bear rank and his religious square knot tonight. The pack actually hasn’t passed out any awards for awhile, so in addition to the bear and square knot he also received his bicycling, fishing, art, map and compass and ultimate belt loops. He also received one gold and two silver arrows. So he had a pile of things to bring home for me to put on his uniform.

After the meeting, one of his leaders congratulated me and said “Yay! You’re all finished. You got him through.” What she doesn’t realize is that I don’t see us as all finished with scouting. We are just beginning. And the way I see it, Ethan still has LOTS of things to earn as a bear. He can earn more arrows, more belt loops, pins, the outdoor activity award, the leave no trace award and the world conservation award. So we will just have to keep working hard and see how far he can go. 🙂

What do you mean my bathroom doesn’t exist?!?!

We’ve been really anxious for getting our basement finished this year. It’s been “in progress” for the last… well, practically since the first year we lived here.  It’s either been an issue of not having the money to spend on the supplies to progress on it, or finally when I was working two jobs, having the money but no time to put into it. The main floor was so crowded with the stuff of life, that I had made a decision to just move it all down into the basement so we could have a decent living area on the ground floor. Then, when I finally went down to one job, we had so much stuff in the basement that we couldn’t start working on it.

Now that we seem better able to handle our cost of living, we have been able to get some money saved up for home improvement, including working towards finishing the basement. So this year, we have put a lot of effort into emptying it out, and once we were close to ready, we started getting quotes from professionals. The quotes were more than we were hoping for, but we figured the cost was justified, and finally picked someone that seemed to have an eye for detail that I could respect.

When we had the house built in 2004, the base price of the home did not include a basement. Most of the models by Tuscany Homes cost $10,000 to finish the basement, but we selected the “Stillwater” plan, that would only be $7,000 extra for an unfinished basement. Then, we added other upgrades, including air conditioning, windows in the upstairs bathrooms, an upgraded bathtub in the master bathroom, an island in the kitchen, upgraded the shelves to pull out like drawers in the cabinets in the kitchen, and linoleum in the dining area. On Rebecca’s father’s advise, we also asked Tuscany to finish the bathroom in the basement for $4,000 more, as it would cost much more than this to actually finish it after the house was done.

As we initially got a permit to finish the basement back in 2005, it had long since expired past the extensions the city gave us. Our contractor called the city to ask about getting a new permit, and contacted us to inform us that the city had no record of the bathroom in the basement ever having been finished, and this could add complications to getting the work done, from a time and money aspect.

This really frustrated me, and I went into the city hall to find out more information.  According to Beverly, the lady in the planning department, their documentation showed the basement as “unfinished” during the initial inspection of 2004, with no indication of the bathroom being inspected. I explained that the basement was technically unfinished, as most of it was still raw foundation and framing, but we paid Tuscany to finish the bathroom. She continued to push that the inspector made no record of this during the final inspection. I found this annoying, as the bathroom would have been impossible to miss, so either the inspector purposely ignored it (which I think would be illegal) or simply failed to record details regarding its inspection. She explained that they no longer had the floor plans from 2004, so they could not verify it was part of the initial build of the house. She went on to explain the people who worked for the city back then were no longer around, so there was no way they could verify the bathroom was finished. I mentioned it was listed on the floor plan we submitted for the permit, and those floor plans were the same we submitted back in 2005 to get the initial permit.

Fortunately, she had a record of the original permit request, and was able to pull it up and verify my claim. Even though it was listed there, she was still determined not to bend on claiming the bathroom needed to be inspected, and the rules for 2004 had changed three times to now, so things that might have passed previously could pose a problem. Unfortunately, I don’t see any other way around this, so we just need to wait and see what happens when we go through the inspections.

At least we’re finally moving towards getting the basement finished! He originally said we might be done by Thanksgiving, although with the delays on the permit, that is looking less likely. I just hope we can have it done before Christmas.

The Creation of Snakes

Ethan had to write a story about one of Heavenly Father’s creations as one of his requirements to earn the cub scout religious square knot. This is what he wrote:

The Creation of Snakes

By Ethan Andelin

“Hiss,” said a snake one day. “Hiss!” it said again. “HISS!!” it screamed. A bunch of snakes came from hunting. Snakes are oviously awesome. I realy, realy love snakes. The snakes ate thear dilisiose dinner of, frogs and tuna fish at the pond. The End.

Happy Halloween

This year, I wasn’t really getting into the Halloween spirit. I think it’s mainly because the whole house feels like it’s been turned upside down, due to preparations for getting the basement finished. We did try on costumes a few weeks ago to make sure we didn’t need to go out and buy anything for anyone though. The school kids got up this morning and got dressed and put their costumes on, and went to school. The school’s costume parade started at 9:30 but Dinah was refusing to get dressed and I just didn’t feel like fighting everyone to get dressed. Then the thought of wrangling them all down to the school by myself and having to try to keep them under control while I tried to take pictures, all felt really overwhelming to me. So we stayed home. Dinah was mad later when she found out that the parade was over and we hadn’t gone. I’m feeling rather depressed about it as well.

The kids came home from school, and instead of hopping in the car to go to Kyle’s work, like we usually do, we just stayed home. The kids kept asking when we were going to leave, but Kyle and I decided that since Symantec was doing something different this year, that we wouldn’t go. Usually the kids get to go trick or treating from cubicle to cubicle. This year they just wanted to change it and do a ‘trunk or treat’ instead. Personally, one of the things I liked best about going to trick or treat at Kyle’s work was that it was INSIDE and therefore we didn’t have to freeze, or deal with chilling wind. Today was pretty nice and warm considering it’s the end of October, but that’s not the point.

I called the new Saratoga Springs Pizza Hut to order our traditional Halloween pizza dinner, and Kyle came home. We ate dinner early and then it was time to trick or treat in the neighborhood. 🙂

The fact that we didn’t go to Symantec this year, meant that they got out nice and early while the sun was still up! Kyle took the kids out and I stayed home with Adam to try to clean up in between passing out candy. We did have one episode where Chloe ran off and left Kyle and the others so she could come home. THEN she decided that she didn’t want to be home and wanted to be out with daddy still. Fortunately they were coming up the street on the opposite side and I could just get her back out there again. But it did catch me off guard when she came home without them.

So this year we didn’t carve or decorate the pumpkins at all. I didn’t take the little ones and go down to the school for the parade. We didn’t go to trick or treat at Symantec. All of that makes me somewhat sad, but I’m trying not to beat myself up over it. After all, we did let the kids wear costumes to school. We did order pizza, like we always do. And they did get to go out trick or treating. Hopefully by the time Halloween rolls around next year, the basement will be finished, and I will have had time to rearrange the whole house and unpack the garage, and therefore I will be able to access the Halloween stuff!

I would say that we still did enough to make it an exhausting day. 🙂
